In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
